From the Stilfserjoch to the Furkelhütte/Alpine hut Furkel

At a glance: A 1-day tour on a high mountain trail along the southern slopes of the Stilfs ridge, with wonderful views to the Ortles range and the Stilfserjoch. This is a circular walk using regular busses and a chair-lifts. Rest stop possible at the Stilfserjoch and the Furkelhütte/Alpine hut Furkel at the end of the walk.

Best time: summer and autumn, best months July to September

Joys: high mountain walk but basically downhill, wonderful motives for photographers at the Goldsee/Lago d’Oro and the Furkelhütte/Alpine hut Furkel.

Efforts: 700 m difference in altitude but gently downhill all the way to the Furkelhütte/Alpine hut Furkel, medium difficulty, high mountain equipment and sure-footedness required. Total walking time: 3 hours, bus trip from Trafoi to the Stilfserjoch: about 1 hour.

Starting point: Stilfserjoch (2720m), reachable from Trafoi or Prad using regular busses.

Route: From the 1 Stilfserjoch on path no. 20 going gently upwards towards the Dreiländereck (remains of military barracks from the First World War are still visible), then on the level and then constantly downhill on a path that is in part exposed until the 2 Furkelhütte/Alpine hut Furkel, with its wonderful panoramic terrace.

Descent: Trafoi, the starting point (1543 m) can easily be reached by chair-lift or on foot along the forest path 3 (walking time about 40 minutes).
